I use an MPD client named "ncmpc" (apt-get install ncmpc), here is a
quickstart:

ncmpc RET then press 3, you can now browse your music collection, move
around with the up/down cursor keys and enter (to go inside
directories), press SPC on what you want to get queued, now press 2, in
this screen you see your current playlist, press enter here on something
to start playback. Use 1 for help!

For other users of my computer I installed glurp (gtk2.4+ frontend to
the Music Player Daemon), I think ncmpc and XWEM/xwem-mpd together are
far more superior but for "normal" people glurp is A-OK.
