Hello Jeremy, I use XEmacs for everything too, you could try outsourcing
every job to other programs, so you can have one XEmacs with everything.
For example if mail retrieval is slow for you then set up fetchmail for
mail retrieval, etc. The main benefit of XWEM is that it is really
integrated into your working environment, if you use another XEmacs
instance for other jobs you loose this.
You haven't just lost the ability to use the global display area from
your other XEmacs, but the dock too (and it is very easy to write your
own dockapps, for example look at my mp3 display dockapp here:
http://ignotus.linuxforum.hu/tmp/memento.jpg, isn't the dockapp a lot
better place for this than the display area?).
